Karu Kamparnup

Added by Karungkarni Art and Culture Aboriginal Corporation

This animated short film was inspired by the Gurindji bush medicine practice of 'karu kamparnup' - treating babies with termite mound. The film was created as part of the ongoing Tamarra project which brings together Indigenous Ecological Knowledge, Western science, art and language through a shared interest in termites and their connection to Gurindji Country in the Northern Territory (Australia). The animated scenes in this video were inspired by details from a large, collaborative painting 'Karu Kamparnup' which was created to illustrate the first chapter of the 'Tamarra: A Story of Termites on Gurindji Country' (Hardie Grant 2023) picture book.
