Funding Culture - Yinhawangka Culture Program

Added by Ngaarda Media

The ‘Living Cultures Program,’ a new initiative by the Yinhawangka Aboriginal Corporation and Rio Tinto, aims to preserve and enhance Yinhawangka cultural heritage and community wellbeing. Funded with a $9.5 million investment from Rio Tinto over six years, the program focuses on documenting and transferring cultural knowledge, such as language, history, and traditional stories. It also seeks to boost local economic development, improve social and emotional wellbeing, and advance cultural land management. Lorraine Injie, Chair of Yinhawangka Aboriginal Corporation, stated, “This project brings an opportunity for changing the way in which Aboriginal programs are conceptualised, planned, and implemented.” The partnership also includes developing cultural awareness training to foster greater understanding of Yinhawangka culture. The program represents a significant step toward empowering the Yinhawangka people and ensuring the preservation of their rich heritage.
